Born as a child of a Russian soldier stationed in Siberia and an Ainu ESPer, Petrel has always been something of an outcast. From the early age, his quite disturbing powers drove away all the social contacts he would have needed at that age. Therefore, now that he's 15 years old, he is someone who cannot seem to understand the concept of friendship or human contact in general. Keeping to himself, he skulks around Athena Academy, rarely interacting with the other students. However, whereas many find his situation quite pitiable, he himself seems to be very content with it. He finds his time of solitude and self-reflecting important to himself, and actually grows more frustrated the more people try to establish contact with him. In other words, he is a loner by choice, even if he hasn't really learned what it means to have friends. In his mind, he has already made a decision that he will be just fine without such things, and thus, he concentrates on his studies and buries himself in books.
Petrel is often called forth when there is a situation regarding spirits and their ilk, and Fujou Suzuka cannot be contacted. Petrel excels in dealing with troubles like this, and while he finds it annoying that he has to deal with other people while doing his job, he still performs what is required of him. His abilities show finesse not often found in those possessed by ESPers, and thus he is kept in high regard... even if he himself would just want to be forgotten. Caught between a trap of being semi-famous and wanting nothing to do with people, Petrel spends his days in vain attempts of hiding from the society who, time and time again, drag him back into the light he has so grown to abhor.
